In this fictional case study, I explored strategies to support a 12-year-old with autism and ADHD who struggles with routines and learning daily living skills at home. I looked at ways his parents could use visual supports, motivation techniques, and behavior strategies to help him build independence. This project helped me understand how to apply behavior management tools in real-life situations—something that will definitely be useful in my future as a speech-language pathologist.
I wrote this essay for my Intro to Exceptional Persons class, where we explored the 13 disability categories recognized in special education. Before taking this course, I didn’t realize just how complex and diverse each disability could be. This assignment helped me break down what each category really means and how it affects people in educational settings. It also gave me a better understanding of how to support individuals with different needs, which is something I’ll carry with me into my future career as a speech-language pathologist. Learning this now will help me create more inclusive and personalized therapy for the people I’ll work with.
